The Mission of SONS is to disciple urban youth and to positively influence their families and their environment through programs and activities centered in the person, power, and purpose of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The vision of SONS is to cultivate community creativity as a force to impact the next generation for greatness; to challenge and provide resources and relationships that dare to develop the untapped potential of our community's young people; to be an aide in the advancement of our children's growth in four primary areas-social, cultural, academic and spiritual.
SONS was founded in 1993 with the vision for the City of Port Huron and its "at risk" urban youth. SONS is meeting the problems of drugs, violence and crime head on with its ministry of early intervention. In its history, SONS has had a positive effect on our community. Through organized recreation, tutoring, counseling, and leadership training, the lives of many have been challenged and changed. SONS has been able to reach thousands of young people through the SONS Basketball League and the juvenile detention center outreach. Other activities include after school programs (K-5th), breakfast club, performing arts, computer classes, field trips, crafts, cooking, career planning, chapel and junior and senior high school activity nights. The vision and ministry of SONS has been carried forth by concerned citizens representing the Port Huron Area. Founder and Director Tyrone Burrell, the Board of Directors, dedicated volunteers and staff provide oversight of operations, fund raising and activities.
